Propeller Feathering Switch, 560B24
The Propeller Feathering Switch was located on the Pilots' instrument panel or pedestal of US Army Air Force and US Navy multi-engine aircraft, one for each engine. In the event of engine malfunction or damage while in flight, the pilot or co-pilot 'feathered' the propellor of the stricken engine, which placed the pitch of the engine's propeller blades parallel to the direction of flight. This would prevent the propellor from 'windmilling', or spinning uncontrollably, due to the force of the air upon the propellor, which could cause further damage to the aircraft.
Feathering switches were found on Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress bombers, Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers, and B-25 Mitchell and B-26 Marauder medium bombers.
These Feathering Switches were made by Hart Manufacturing Company, part number 560B24. Approx 3 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. The buttons depress and release as they should.
