US Navy 4" Boat Compass with Binnacle, Lionel 1942
This is a WWII-era 4 inch Boat Compass made by The Lionel Corporation in 1942, housed in a copper, glass-faced binnacle with a side-mounted kerosene lamp for nighttime illumination.
The compass card rotates freely within the compass bowl, which is suspended on a gimbal mount to permit stable reading of the compass while on rolling sea. The bowl is partially filled with damping fluid and can be replenished. The binnacle has a small kerosene lamp housed behind a small hatch in a small receptacle mounted to the right side. The receptacle has a mirror to reflect light toward the compass.
Its in exceptional condition given its age. Binnacle measures 8.75 high, 9 inches wide, and 7 inches deep.
