Compass, Magnetic Direct Reading, US Navy Mark VIII, AN5732-1 with Mounting Bracket

$300.00

This example of the US Navy's Aircraft Direct Reading Magnetic Compass Mark VIII, AN5732-1 (FSC R888-C-800) with mounting bracket, was used in the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber and the TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber.  This compass was installed above the pilots forehead, see image of the SBD's cockpit showing the location of this compass.

The compass was illuminated electrically via bulb (included but unlikely operational) mounted in a small compartment over the compass itself. Inside the same compartment are the direction compensating screws, used to calibrate the compass.

This example is in very good condition for its age. The fluid is partially evaporated but could be replace with fresh fluid. The compass card rotates freely and its markings are clear. The compass measures ~3 inches tall by ~3.5 inches wide and ~4 inches deep.   The bracket adds ~1/2 inches laterally and at the bottom, and ~2 inches to the top.
