General Electric
Fuel Quantity Indicator, SB2C Helldiver, US Navy, WWII, Model 8DJ-4
This is an exceptional specimen of the 4-tank Fuel Quantity Indicator made specifically for the WWII-era US Navy Dive Bomber Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, made by General Electric, Type DJ-4, Model 8DJ4PDF. It also has the Federal Stock number stamped on its bottom, R88-I-2091-120, as well as the yellow USN anchor symbol stenciled on its side. This indicator measured the fuel quantity in the protected tanks in the left and right wing tank (each holding 105 gals), fuselage tank (110 gals), and the droppable auxiliary tank (in bomb bay,130 gals) when in use. See illustration from SB2C-3,4 Flight Manual dated July 1945.
The four pointers, one on each dial, are hidden beneath the facing until electricity is applied. Then each pointer emerges, white against a black background, to the level detected in each tank. The pointers can be viewed if the instrument is manually agitated.
It is in very good condition for its age. The glass is clear and the lettering distinct. The glass is slightly loose in its frame, likely missing its gasket. Measures 3.25 inches diameter and ~3 inches deep.
