B-47 Stratofortress Type A-5 Fire Control System Maintenance Digest
This is an original Maintenance Digest for the General Electric Type A-5 Fire Control System Model 2CFR10A2 used in B and E versions of the USAF's Boeing B-47 Stratofortress Strategic Bomber. It is dated February 1954.
The Type A-5 Fire Control System was a radar-directed tail defense system using twin 20mm cannons mounted in a tail turret. The system controls were mounted behind the co-pilot, who would swivel his seat rearward to operate the system. Once the controls are set by the co-pilot, the system could automatically detect and track pursuing aircraft and aim and fire the 20-mm cannons.
This 7'x5"x1", 150-page manual, intended as a pocket summary, contains 96 pages of maintenance text and tables and over 50-fold-out diagrams and schematics of each subsystem.
It is in exceptional condition given its age. All pages appear present and intact.
