Attitude Gyro Horizon Indicator, F9F Cougar & HUP Retriever, Sperry 672740

This is a 1950's-era Attitude Gyro Horizon Indicator as used in the US Navy/Marine Corps Fighter Jet Grumman F9F-5 Cougar and the HUP-1,-3 Helicopter, made by Sperry PN 672740 as a "fast-erecting" gyro (as it fast as it could be in the early 1950's). It also has the USN stock # of R88-I-1331, linking it to the F9F-5 as seen in the F9F Flight Manual (see photo of page from manual dated 1955). The gyro was also named as a Type H-5, but is not labeled as such. In the photo gallery, see the illustrations of the location of this gyro on the instrument panels of the F9F-5 and the HUP-1 from their flight manuals. This indicator has a label of Cherry Point, the USMC air station in North Carolina, dated 1954, so it very well could have appeared in a USMC aircraft.

The knob adjusts the indexing 'aircraft' within the dial to align the perspective of the pilot to the horizon indicator.  It is in terrific shape for its age.  The glass and case are intact and the dial markings are clear and precise. The horizon sphere rotates freely, but requires the correct electrical input to function properly. The thin gasket beneath the glass is slipping from its position, see photo, but could probably be opened and repositioned.  Measures ~3.5 inches diameter and ~8 inches long.
