Attitude Gyro Horizon Indicator, A4D-1 Skyhawk
This is a 1950-60's-era Attitude Gyro Horizon Indicator as used in early versions of the US Navy/Marine Corps Jet Fighter/Attack Aircraft Douglas A4D-1 Skyhawk, made by Bendix to a Douglas spec (see data label). See diagram of A4D-1 instrument panel from its flight manual dated 1962. This indicator has a service label of Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda CA dated 1967.
The left knob adjusts the indexing 'aircraft' within the dial to align the perspective of the pilot to the horizon indicator. The right knob cages the gyro when pulled. The two 'button's on the face are red lights which would illuminate the horizon when twisted, and the lines leading from bottom center to each light is a wire to the light. It is in terrific shape for its age. The glass and case are intact and the dial markings are clear and precise. The horizon sphere rotates freely, but requires the correct electrical input to function properly. Measures ~3.5 inches diameter and ~8 inches long.
