Compass, Direct Reading Magnetic, 45 deg Angle, US Navy Mark X

$350.00

This WWII-era Direct Reading Magnetic Compass Mark X, Kollsman FSSC number 88-C-857 was made for aircraft of the US Navy such as the fighter F-4F Wildcat, where it appeared on the angled center panel in front of the control stick.

The interesting aspect of the design of this compass is that the directional mechanism lies horizontally within the rear chamber, and displays the direction on a compass card mounted at a 45 degree angle.  In addition, the desired course heading can be selected by rotating the knob at the bottom center of the dial, which turns the double-arrow pointer clockwise or counter-clockwise.  The single pointer would indicate true magnetic north. There are adjustment screws for E-W and N-S for calibration beneath the compass body.

This example is in good cosmetic condition and functions as it should . The fluid is contained the rear chamber, and the single pointer rotates to the proper northerly direction. This is the first of the angled Mark X that we've ever come across in our years of collecting. Measures 3.25 inches diameter, ~5 inches tall, and ~5 inches deep.
