US Marine Corps
Free Gunner's Manual, USMC Air Defense Group, 1944
Here is a very interesting find: the Free Gunner's Manual, published for the Bombardier and Air Gunner, Marine Corps Air Defense Group - 43, Marine Corps Air Station El Centro California. The manual focuses on the responsibilities of the 'free' gunner in aircraft (vs the pilot) that were in use by US Marine Corps aviators during 1944: SBD Dauntless, TBF Avenger, SB2C Helldiver, PB4Y Privateer, and PB2Y Coronado.
The 105-page manual covers the basics of aerial gunnery but also addresses radio, radar, and the specific knowledge necessary for effective gunnery from the rear seat position.
This soft-cover manual is in good condition given its age. Some slight fraying on the spine but all pages appear to be intact. Measures ~8 x 10 inches.
