Autopilot Turn Controller, B-47, USAF Type E-1 Sperry 662611
This is an example of the Turn Controller, Type E-1, as used in USAF aircraft of the late 1940's. This item has a serial number prefix of AF-48, evidence of manufacturing year of 1948 for a USAF order. This is the Observer's Turn Controller in the Cold War-era USAF B-47 Stratojet strategic bomber, used by the Observer (i.e., Navigator/Bombardier) to control the aircraft while on a bombing run. (See page from the B-47E Flight Manual dated 1954 explaining the controller).
The controller is experienced but a fine artifact. The Turn Control knob rotates, and Automatic/Manual switch requires the proper electrical connection to toggle. Measures approximately 6 inches tall by 6 inches wide and 5 inches deep.
