This is a fine specimen of a Vertical Speed / Rate of Climb Indicator, Type 95 Model 2, as used in aircraft of the Japanese Army during WWII.  It measures rate of climb or descent in up to 100 meters/minute.

This indicator was used in a number of land-based aircraft of the Japanese Army, including*:

  • Kawasaki Ki-48 Type 99 Light Bomber aka "Lily"
  • Mitsubishi Ki-46 Type 100 twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft aka "Dinah"
  • Kawasaki Ki-45 Type 2 Toryu twin-engine fighter aka "Nick"
  • Mitsubishi Ki-67 Type 4 Hiryū heavy bomber aka "Peggy"

*According to the Funatsu Aviation Instruments Museum Website

It is in exceptional condition given its age. The calibration knob is on the side of the instrument at the 3 o'clock position, appears to be stuck in this example. The glass is intact. Measures ~3.25 inches across and ~ 3.5 inches deep.
