In the mid-1980s four Il.86 airframes were selected to become Russia’s first major modern airborne command post aircraft designed to operate in a nuclear-contaminated
battlefield environment. Registered 86146-86149, they entered service with the 8th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at Chkalovski air force base, near Moscow, where they are still based. At one time 86146 was withdrawn from service, possibly after damage of some sort. Later it was returned to service, probably with an improved equipment fit, at which time these instrument panels were removed.

Missing from the right panel is a 75m/sec VSI and from the left panel an unknown instrument, plus dozens of TC-SM-2 advisory lights across the three panels.
