This 350-page book was authored by Marcelle Knaack of the Office of Air Force History was and first published in 1978. This volume covers the rationale behind the development of each post-WWII fighter from the F-80 Shooting Star to the F-5 Freedom Fighter, operational requirements, and the development and operational history of each. It also describes any problems with the aircraft and the modifications implemented to resolve them. Its two appendices include WWII-era fighters used post war and experimental fighters never approved for development and why. The book also includes technical information about each aircraft.
